The mycenaean lady

The mycenaean lady. The serious and pensive expression of the goddess reveals the solemnity of the moment, as she accepts the gift - a necklace, which she holds tightly in her right hand. She wears a short-sleeved bodice over a sheer blouse, which delineates her ample bosom. Her intricate hairstyle and rich jewelry (necklaces and bracelets) are striking. Mycenaean Acropolis.

eight shield

Figure of eight shields. Wall paintings depicting figure of eight-shields with a suspension strap at the middle. The motif on each shield's surface shows that they represent originals made of cow's hide. The figure-of-eight shield, a defensive weapon, becomes here the symbol of a war goddess. Although it is a common motif (models of this type of shield exist in gold, ivory and semi-precious stones), this is a rare representation in Mycenaean monumental painting. Mycenaean Acropolis.

wall painting

Wall-painting fragments with a representation of a procession of women bearing offerings for a deity. Their facial characteristics, elaborate hairstyle and rich garments are visible on the best preserved figure. Bands of rosettes and stylized ivy-leaves frame the composition. From the later Tiryns palace. National Archaeological Museum of Athens

two women in a chariot

Wall-painting fragments with a representation of a wild-boar hunt. Two women in a chariot watch the hounds attack a wounded pray in the forest. A footman follows, leading more hounds. From the later Tiryns palace. National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

Bull leaping

Wall-painting fragments with a representation of bull-leaping. An acrobat leaps over the bull while holding onto its horns. This ritual theme symbolizes the struggle and dominion of man over wild nature. Prom the earlier Tiryns palace. National Archaeological Museum of Athens
