The East pediment of the temple of Zeus describes the myth of Olympia which was the struggle for supermacy over the Sanctuary. This monumental composition in Parian marble, the work of an unknown but great sculptor, is distinguished by its solidy and the silent tragedy emanating from the figures before the events that about to transpire.

The symbolism in this grandiose sculpture of the ascendancy of the Greeks over the barbarians is clear, for the events of the Persian Wars that had convulsed the civilised world at the time were still recent and deeply engraved in the consciousness of the whole Greek nation.
